Passengers on a boat stuck in treacherous waters in Marina del Rey were rescued on Wednesday, according to authorities.
In a news conference Thursday, Sgt. Ron Nohles with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detailed the rescue in which a boat that was out lobster fishing crashed into rocks. Nohles said a line from a lobster trap got wrapped around the 28-foot boat’s propeller, causing the crash.
A mayday call from the boat came in around 7:20 p.m. Authorities, including the Sheriff’s Department and other agencies, responded to the scene where they found a man in the water.
“The boat had pitched almost 90 degrees, so it came up sideways, and that’s when the one person went overboard,” Nohles said.
The man who went overboard was successfully rescued and sustained no injuries, he added.
Crews towed the boat from the scene. In total, five people were rescued, including a 9-year-old child, authorities said. No injuries were reported.
