A firefighter lowered from a hovering helicopter rescued a dog from the Los Angeles River during a sudden afternoon rain storm on Friday.

The small brown dog was spotted floating down the swollen river near Memorial Drive and Forest Lawn Drive, said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.  It was safely hoisted to a nearby embankment, according to an alert from the LAFD.

Heavy rains fell across Los Angeles on Friday afternoon, complicating the start of the weekend for millions of local commuters, and at least one very wet dog.

The National Weather Service warned heavy downpours will continue Friday afternoon, accompanied by lightning in some places, but said the weather is expected to clear for Saturday.
