Downed tree shuts down portion of Coldwater Canyon; drivers ignore closure

A tree toppled overnight, taking several power lines with it and leaving Coldwater Canyon closed Tuesday morning.

The incident was reported shortly before midnight on Monday in the 2400 block of Coldwater Canyon Drive.

Fire crews arrived to find the power lines were still live and the tree was partially blocking the road.

Caution tape was placed to block traffic and close the road between Shirley Lane and Eden Drive.

Video showed drivers were either unable to see the caution tape or were ignoring it. One vehicle nearly crashed into the toppled tree after passing under the tape.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews were called to de-energize the lines so City crews would be able to cut up and remove the tree.

The power lines will then need to be put back in place and reenergized.

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours due to the needed cleanup and repairs.

Meanwhile, nearby Mulholland Drive is also closed in the Beverly Crest area following a mudslide from a powerful storm that recently hit the region.
