Officials recently considered assigning California households a daily water allotment that would dictate how many gallons of water people could use per day without facing additional charges.

If implemented, local water companies or city officials would assign each household the daily water allotment based on factors such as census records, aerial photography and satellite imagery, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

State and local water agencies worked on the plan, which resembled methods already implemented in areas such as Santa Cruz, Irvine and Santa Monica.
