The Shetland sheepdog, named Savvy, was turned over to the Culver City Police Department by a family that purchased him from the alleged burglar, said the animal’s owner, Melissa Henning.

After seeing news reports of the dog’s disappearance, the family realized Savvy’s owner was desperately searching for him, Henning said.

More than 300 people had joined a Facebook group named “Help Find Savvy the Sheltie.” A flyer was circulated on social media and in the neighborhood near Henning’s home, located just northwest of the 405 and 90 freeways’ interchange (map). The flyer said Savvy was believed to have been stolen.

Henning said the animal, who was “not very responsive” Saturday night, had not been given his prescribed medication while he was missing and probably suffered several seizures during that time. She planned to have him examined by a veterinarian on Sunday.

Culver City police declined to provide additional details about the case, citing an ongoing investigation.
