Firefighters were battling a brush fire burning in rugged terrain near Lake Perris in Moreno Valley on Wednesday night.

The so-called Merwin Fire was reported at 8:38 p.m. in the area of Merwin Street and Campbell Avenue, according to an incident report from the Riverside County Fire Department.

The fire had burned 30 acres as of 9 p.m. That number had jumped to 175 acres by 11 p.m., according to the report.

The fire was heading toward the Lake Perris State Recreation Area where the Group Camping area in the park had been evacuated as a precaution.

Approximately 240 firefighters along with 20 engine companies were battling the fire on the ground, fire officials stated.

No structures were being threatened.
