Firefighters Extinguish House Fire in Van Nuys; 1 Man Injured

Firefighters on Sunday extinguished a house fire in Van Nuys that left one man injured, officials said.

An image from a cellphone video shows a fire that broke out at a home in Van Nuys on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015.

The blaze, which destroyed the second-floor addition to a one-story home in the 6700 block of Gaviota Avenue (map), was put out by 45 firefighters within 25 minutes, the Los Angeles Fire Department said on Twitter.

The flames were confined to the house, which had no functional smoke alarm, according to department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

A 56-year-old man, who was reportedly sleeping when the fire broke out, suffered second-degree burns to his feet and chest, the LAFD said. He was listed in fair condition.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, and a damage estimate is to be determined, fire officials said.
