Firefighters are mopping up after a small brush fire that erupted in Glendale on Tuesday afternoon amid another day of windy conditions, the city’s fire department said.
The blaze, dubbed the Grandview Fire, ignited on Mountain Street above Brand Park, the Glendale Fire Department tweeted around 2:30 p.m.
Sky5 aerial video over the fire showed aircraft trying to douse the flames that were burning along a hillside. The flames appeared to be spreading uphill and away from homes, sending tall columns of smoke into the air.
The fire scorched about 8 acres before forward progress was stopped.
Fourteen homes in the area of Mountain Street and Idlewood Road were briefly evacuated as a precautionary measure, according to the Fire Department. Residents have since been allowed to return home.
Power was also temporarily turned off at homes in the 900 and 1000 block of West Mountain Street “as a safety precaution,” the department tweeted.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The blaze erupted a day after a pair of wildfires erupted in Orange County, scorching thousands of acres and damaging homes as fierce Santa Ana winds fanned the flames. Tens of thousands of residents impacted by the Silverado and Blue Ridge fires remained under evacuation orders on Tuesday.
While winds continued to be an issue during the morning, the National Weather Service predicted gusts would start to weaken after 1 p.m. and will continue to subside.
