Firefighters freed a man who was trapped in a maintenance hole at the Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia Thursday afternoon.

When they arrived at about 2:35 p.m., firefighters found the man, who had fallen off a ladder and into an underground area, a distance of about 22 feet, fire officials said in a press release.

Aerial footage from Sky5 showed what appeared to be several dozen firefighters who initially used a ladder to try to get the man but then switched to a hoisting device.

Arcadia firefighters were joined by search and rescue teams from the Monrovia and Pasadena fire departments, as well as a hazmat team from Glendale and another unit from South Pasadena.

After 69 minutes, the man, who suffered moderate injuries, was loaded onto a gurney and transferred to an ambulance for the trip to Huntington Memorial Trauma Center for further treatment.
