A brush fire burning in Ventura prompted the evacuation of a school and threatened six structures Monday afternoon, but firefighters were able to make significant progress against it, authorities said.

Dubbed the Foothill Fire, the blaze was reported about 1:30 p.m. in the area of Foothill and Kimball roads (map), according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

By about 7 p.m., it had burned 50 acres and was 75 percent contained, with forward progress halted, the department stated. Firefighters were slated to be on scene overnight and into Tuesday to prevent any flare-ups.

Crews were working to increase containment lines around the fire, which had threatened power lines operated by Southern California Edison, the Fire Department stated on its Facebook page.

Ventura Missionary School was evacuated and Foothill Road between Kimball Road and North Saticoy Avenue was closed while more than 150 firefighters responded.

Six structures were threatened, the Facebook page stated about 3:45 p.m.

Animal owners were told to take their animals to the Ventura County Fairgrounds, but that order was lifted before 5 p.m.

U.S. Forest Service and Cal Fire firefighters were assisting, according to tweets from those agencies.
