Authorities across Southern California continue to enact curfews following unrest prompted by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Demonstrations have turned violent and destructive in downtown Los Angeles, the Fairfax District, Santa Monica and Long Beach, among other locations — leading Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency in Los Angeles County and to order National Guard troops deployed to the region on May 30.
Curfews were enacted and expanded by several cities over the weekend and into the week.
Los Angeles County first issued a curfew for 6 p.m. Sunday, affecting the county’s 10 million residents. The county said in announcing its curfew that the order “supersedes” any city curfews that are less “stringent.” That curfew was renewed every day since including Wednesday, when it will go into effect at 9 p.m. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will begin to enforce the curfew beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in a tweet.
Traveling to and from work, or offering emergency care is exempt from the order.
A curfew was extended in the city of Los Angeles for a fourth night Tuesday, which is as long as a curfew was in effect during the 1992 riots in response to the Rodney King beating verdict, according to an L.A. Times story from that time.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva on Tuesday said the countywide curfew will continue until “protests are gone.” But the American Civil Liberties Union said that’s unconstitutional.
Curfews for the night of Wednesday, June 3:
- Los Angeles County: 9 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday. Will be enforced by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at 10 p.m.
- City of Los Angeles: 9 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday
- Beverly Hills: 1 p.m. Wednesday for business district, 4 p.m. citywide
- Culver City: 6 p.m. Wednesday

- Los Angeles County: 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday (curfew does not apply to persons voting in special elections in some cities, including Commerce and Pico Rivera, officials said)
- City of Los Angeles: 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday
- Burbank: 5 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday
- Santa Monica: 2 p.m. Tuesday to 5:30 a.m. Wednesday
- West Hollywood: 4 p.m. Tuesday to sunrise Wednesday
- Beverly Hills: 1 p.m. Tuesday
- Culver City: 4 p.m. Tuesday through 5:30am Wednesday
- Garden Grove: 2-night curfew starting 6 p.m. Tuesday
- Hemet: 6 p.m. curfew until further notice
- Moreno Valley: 8 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday
