A 22-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly burglarizing a South Pasadena home while a resident and her 94-year-old grandmother were inside, police said.
Micah Darrel Everett, of Los Angeles, was taken into custody without incident following a 90-minute search of the surrounding neighborhood, according to a news release from the South Pasadena Police Department.
A woman called police about 12:30 a.m. and said someone was breaking into her house, and that she had locked herself in the basement while her elderly relative was asleep upstairs, the release said.
Officers responded to the 700 block of Monterey Road (map), conducted a search of the property and escorted the resident to safety. Police then encountered the suspect in the backyard and a foot pursuit ensued, the department said.
After Everett ran across the street and disappeared into the neighborhood, the statement said, officers were delayed in chasing him due to a passing train.
A perimeter was established and assistance was requested from nearby police departments. Some 30 officers responded from several neighboring cities including San Marino, along with two helicopters from Pasadena and Pomona and two K-9s from Alhambra and Monterey Park, authorities said.
Multiple residents in the area reported Everett “running, jumping and hiding on several different properties,” the news release said.
He was later apprehended while running from officers in the 800 block of Orange Grove Place (map), and was found to be in possession of “burglary tools, stolen property, narcotics paraphernalia, and [had] changed clothes in an attempt to evade capture,” according to South Pasadena police. The location is less than half a mile northeast of the home where the burglary was reported.
Everett is scheduled to be arraigned in Alhambra Superior Court on Monday.
