One person was killed and two others injured after an illegal street race in Gardena ended in a violent crash Tuesday evening.

The crash occurred around 4:50 p.m. at the intersection of 155th Street and Vermont Avenue.

It was believed a black Ford Mustang and a white Audi were racing down Vermont Avenue when the Mustang collided with a Honda van traveling west on 155th Street at Vermont Avenue, according to a news release from the Gardena Police Department.

The driver of the Mustang was ejected after he lost control of the vehicle and flipped over. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His female passenger survived but was injured, according to Lt. Steve Prendergast with Gardena police.

She and the driver of the Honda were both hospitalized, Prendergast said.

The other vehicle involved in the street race kept driving.

That vehicle was described as a 2008 or newer white Audi, possibly a model A4, the release stated.

The driver was believed to be a black man in his 20s.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Gardena Police Department Traffic Investigators at 310-217-9635 or 310-217-6189.
