Major delays were expected in Malibu after a collision caused traffic signals on Pacific Coast Highway to stop working for several miles, and part of Malibu Canyon Road to close for at least 12 hours.
An impaired driver struck a power pole, causing it to fall over and block lanes on Malibu Canyon Road around 7:30 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
Malibu Canyon Road was closed between Pacific Coast Highway and Mulholland Drive, LASD Sgt. Phillip Brooks said.
The closure was expected to remain in effect until at least 10 p.m., according to an LASD news release.
Most traffic signals stopped working for several miles on Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu Canyon Road and Coastline Drive (map), but were restored by 12:20 p.m., the California Highway Patrol tweeted.
The crash also knocked out power to 3,363 homes east of Malibu Canyon Road and north of Pacific Coast Highway.
As of 10 a.m., power had been restored to all but 442 homes, according to a Southern California Edison spokesperson.
All power was expected to be restored by the evening, Brooks said.
The condition of the driver was not immediately known, he added.
The LASD, SoCal Edison and California Department of Transportation responded to the incident.
