The blaze started around 8:20 a.m. at a 3-story residential and commercial structure in the 3900 block of West Sixth Street (map), according to the Katherine Mann with the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The flames were confined to a pet store located in the building, prompting firefighters to evacuate the animals inside, Mann said in a tweet.

It took 41 firefighters roughly 36 minutes to extinguish the blaze, according to an LAFD tweet.

One dog, 20 birds and a hundred fish died in the “smoke charged store” a separate tweet stated. It was unclear whether any animals had been hurt.

No residents were reported to have been injured in the apartments above the store.

The fire’s cause was under investigation, and no further information has been released.
