Los Angeles city officials are moving forward with their plans to crack down on illegal street racing and street takeovers.
The city council approved the proposal by a vote of 12-1 on Tuesday; among the efforts being taken by officials would be the deployment of more police officers at 20 intersections across L.A. that are known for street takeovers.
The pilot program will address street racing and takeovers at five intersections in each LAPD bureau that are considered hot spots.
Those intersections are:
LAPD Central Bureau
- Grand Avenue and 2nd Street
- Grand Avenue and 3rd Street
- Grand Avenue and 4th Street
- North Myers and Kearney streets
- Figueroa Avenue and Second Street
LAPD South Bureau
- Crenshaw Boulevard and Florence Avenue
- Manchester Boulevard and San Pedro Street
- Hoover Avenue and Century Boulevard
- Western Avenue and Century Boulevard
- Normandie and Gage avenues
LAPD Valley Bureau
- Balboa and Foothill boulevards
- Bledsoe Street and Bradley Avenue
- Balboa and San Fernando Mission boulevards
- Glenoaks Boulevard and Polk Street
- Yamell Street and Foothill Boulevard
LAPD West Bureau
- Lincoln Boulevard and Manchester Avenue
- Western Avenue and Washington Boulevard
- Mulholland and Corda drive
- Fairfax Avenue and Pico Boulevard
- Pacific Coast Highway and Temescal Canyon Road
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation is planning to spend roughly $80,000 to implement raised and hardened center lines, raised pavement markers, rumble strips and install gutters at certain intersections, city officials said.
On the enforcement side, LAPD is also requesting that cameras be installed at these intersections.
The pilot program is still in its developmental stages and will continue to be worked on by LAPD and LADOT officials, who may identify 30 more intersections as hot spots for street takeovers in the coming months.
