The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department opened fire and struck a man during a pursuit that ended in the Tujunga Canyons area in Santa Clarita Friday night.
The incident began at about 7:09 p.m. with what preliminarily appeared to be a case of reckless driving under the influence in the area of Newhall Avenue and the 14 Freeway, according to Sgt. Akchyan of the Sheriff’s Department.
During the course of the chase, the man, whose identity has not yet been released, briefly led police onto the 14 Freeway before exiting and driving through residential streets, according to a news release from LASD.
At some point, the chase ended and the man allegedly rammed through the gates to enter an RV park, LASD said. It was around this time that the man allegedly abandoned his vehicle and carjacked another car, Akchyan said.
“As deputies were arriving to the location, the suspect attempted to run over the deputies and a deputy involved shooting occurred,” sheriff’s officials said in a news release.
The man was shot at and struck an unknown number of times at about 7:23 p.m. in the 10600 block of Soledad Canyon Road, according to a release from the Sheriff’s Department.
The man, however, fled the RV Park “at a high rate of speed” and was involved in a car crash a short distance away, sheriff’s officials added.
He then left the crashed car and attempted to flee the scene of the accident, at which time deputies detained him, LASD said.
At about 7:30 p.m., Sky5 was overhead as a man was taken into custody on Soledad Canyon Road, where multiple LASD vehicles could be seen surrounding a crashed car.
The man had sustained gunshot wounds to the upper torso and was taken to a nearby hospital, the department added, and no deputies were injured. As of early Saturday, the suspect was listed in stable condition.
