Los Angeles could end its COVID-19 vaccination requirement for city employees.
City officials recommend that the Los Angeles City Council end the requirement as early as June, according to the Los Angeles Times. Officials approved the COVID-19 vaccination requirement three years ago as health officials urged the public to get vaccinated against the deadly virus.
According to the Times, other cities like San Diego and Long Beach have already ended their requirements, as has Los Angeles County.
If city leaders approve ending the requirements, employees who left or were fired due to non-compliance may be eligible to be rehired in the same positions as before.
According to City Administrative Officer Matt Szabo, about 86 workers were terminated under the rule, but it’s unclear how many people left on their own due to the requirement.
Since its implementation, the city has faced multiple lawsuits regarding the COVID-19 vaccine requirement.
The news comes as a newly mutated virus, known as the FLiRT subvariants, subvariants of Omicron, overtake the dominant winter variant, known as JN.1.
