Major Mudslide Prompts Closure of PCH in Ventura County

A major mudslide prompted a closure of Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County Sunday – two days after a large nearby stretch was reopened after similar events led to a three-month closure.

Both directions of the roadway were closed between Calleguas Creek and Mugu Rock after a 5:40 a.m. mudslide, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Reopening the roadway could take four hours or more, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The stretch was located near a 9-mile section that was reopened Friday after a three-month closure that was also prompted by rock slides and mudflows.

In that closure, 40,000 cubic yards of mud and debris flowed onto the roadway from the nearby Springs Fire burn area – a fire which began in May 2013 and spanned some 38 square miles.

Sunday’s closure came after heavy overnight showers prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning for the Springs Fire burn area.
