A man who died after he was shot during an encounter with deputies in an unincorporated county area near Gardena on Thursday had pulled out a gun, officials said.
The incident took place just before 6 p.m. in the 400 block of Redondo Beach Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“The suspect looked toward the deputies and produced a firearm then proceeded to run southbound between two businesses,” the Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release Friday morning.
Deputies caught up with the man after a short foot pursuit and were then involved in a shooting, the news release stated.
“The suspect, a male adult was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene,” Deputy James Nagao of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said in a written statement.
The unidentified man was described only as being Hispanic. He was between 18 and 20 years old, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
No deputies were hurt in the incident.
