Campus police at UC Irvine were questioning a man who brought a gun to the school Tuesday, triggering a campus-wide alert.

The man was first spotted around 2:42 p.m. holding the gun near a flag pole on campus, according to UCI spokeswoman Cathy Lawhon.

The man, described as being about 6 foot 4 inches tall and between 40 to 50 years old, dropped the gun near the flag pole and was then seen walking toward Mesa Court near the School of the Arts, Lawhon said.

Everyone was ordered to shelter in place until an all clear was issued around 3:10 p.m.

Police said he man had a legal permit to carry a gun.

But having weapon on campus was a violation of  school policy, according to Lawhon.

It was not clear if the incident was related to recent protests over a flag ban.
