After days of rains saturated the ground in Southern California, it was expected that mudslides would emerge in some areas.

But the historic rainfall has done more than block a few roads. From Sherman Oaks to Baldwin Hills and beyond, cars, homes and other property have been damaged or outright destroyed.

La Habra Heights and Hacienda Heights were no exception. While evacuations weren’t mandatory, some chose to pack up and leave, a decision that may have been prescient for some whose houses were slammed by water, mud and debris.

Those who remained witnessed powerful streams of water pour down hillsides.
