Homeowners along a stretch of the Newport Beach shoreline are facing fines for illegally extending their yards onto public beach.
Landscaping including grass, bushes, trees and yard furniture has existed for years on the beach in front of dozens of homes on Balboa Peninsula Point in Newport Beach.
California Coastal Commission Enforcement Supervisor Andrew Willis tells The Orange County Register the homeowners have been informed by letter that they need to agree to have the yards removed and they’re subject to fines.
Follow-up letters with fine amounts are expected to be mailed soon.
Willis wouldn’t discuss specific amounts but notes the law allows for a single-incident fine of up to $30,000, an ongoing-violation fine of up to $1,000 per day and a public-access obstruction fine of up to $11,250 per day.
