At least one Ontario police officer opened fire on a man Friday evening, killing him after a pursuit that ended in Pomona.
The pursuit began about 7:37 p.m., when police tried to execute a traffic stop near Mission Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue, according to Cpl. Lee of the Ontario Police Department.
The vehicle failed to yield, and the pursuit traveled through Montclair and into Pomona, where the driver collided with a civilian vehicle, Lee said.
“Moments after the collision, the suspect driver fled from his vehicle, armed with a firearm,” Ontario police said Saturday in a press release.
Police tried to use a K-9 unit to apprehend the driver, though as officers approached, at least one of them fired at and struck the man, who was identified as 39-year-old Pomona resident Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the release added.
Despite life-saving measures from the police, Rodriguez was declared dead. Police said they recovered a handgun at the scene.
Neither Lee nor the police release detailed how many officers fired their weapons, how many bullets were fired or how many times Rodriguez was struck.
No officers were hurt, and it remains unclear if the driver of the civilian vehicle was injured in the crash.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting.
