A Pasadena man accused of fatally shooting three people and firing on responding police officers appeared in court Tuesday, when his arraignment on murder charges was postponed.
John Izeal Smith, 44, was charged with three counts of capital murder and three counts of attempted murder, including of a police officer, in a shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
He appeared in the morning at Pasadena Superior Court, where his arraignment was rescheduled for Aug. 7, a DA’s office spokesperson said.
Smith allegedly fired an assault rifle in an apparent landlord-tenant dispute, police said Monday.
Maria Aguiar, 59, her father, Luis Aguiar, 90, and Jose Hernandez Iribe, 29, were killed, the DA’s office stated.
Two others were injured, police had said.
When officers were called to the scene in response to gunshots in the 1700 block of North Summit Avenue, they came under fire, police said.
Smith barricaded himself inside a home but surrendered peacefully after calling 911 and speaking to a dispatcher who convinced him to leave the home without further bloodshed, police said Monday.
Prosecutors had planned to ask that Smith be held without bail.
