A preliminary 3.6 earthquake rattled Orange County Thursday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The quake struck just before 5 p.m. at a depth of nearly 7.5 miles. The epicenter was about 1 mile southeast of Costa Mesa and just short of a mile and a half northeast of Newport Beach. Another temblor, at a preliminary 3.4 magnitude, was felt just about five minutes later, USGS reports.
KTLA viewers in Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, and Avalon in Catalina Island reported feeling the roller.
“Earthquake felt here in Costa Mesa. Jolt with 4 seconds of roll. Yikes,” a Costa Mesa resident only identified as Hector said in an email.
This is the second earthquake to hit Orange County this week.
On Wednesday, a preliminary 2.6-magnitude earthquake happened around 1:46 p.m., about 2 miles east of Newport Beach at a depth of about 7.7 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey.
So far, there have been no reports of damage from Thursday’s quake.
