Los Angeles County prosecutors say they won’t retry a former LA City Council member for perjury and voter fraud.

Richard Alarcon tells the Los Angeles Times that he feels “completely exonerated” by Thursday’s decision.

Prosecutors alleged that Alarcon and his wife lied about where they lived so that Alarcon could run for a council seat in 2007 and 2009.

They were convicted in 2014 but that was later overturned by an appeals court that said the judge issued improper jury instructions.

Prosecutors had said they would retry the couple. On Thursday, the district attorney’s office said it believes the Alarcons are guilty but notes that they already had completed any possible sentence.

Alarcon spent 51 days under house arrest. His wife was sentenced to 400 hours of community service.
