Hundreds of people gathered in South Los Angeles on Saturday to participate in rallies, marches and other community events commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

Things got underway at 11 a.m. with a rally and march — dubbed Future Fest — that began at the intersection of Florence and Normandie avenues, where the riots began in response to the verdicts in the Rodney King beating trial a quarter-century ago today. The march then proceeded east on Florence, before turning south on Vermont Avenue to 81st Street.

A community festival will be held at the end of the route from 1 to 5 p.m. Musical guests include Al Jackson, Medusa and Los Rakas, among others.

Residents and community leaders began gathering at the intersection early Saturday.
