A high risk of rip currents could pose dangers at Los Angeles and Orange County beaches on Memorial Day, according to the National Weather Service.
A southerly swell was expected to create surf as high as three to four feet at many beaches, and as high as five feet at south-facing beaches, the weather service said.
The agency issued a beach hazards statement, noting on its website that the surf could create dangerous swimming conditions, including rip currents.
Swimmers were being warned by the weather service to stay out of the water or to swim near a lifeguard.
The conditions were expected to impact beaches from north San Diego County to Ventura County. They were expected to last through Monday and possibly until Tuesday morning, forecasters said.
In addition to the potentially dangerous surf, the Huntington Beach Police Department has also issued an advisory at Sunset Beach and Seal Beach after several great white sharks were spotted in the area recently.
Although there had been no immediate warnings to stay out of the water, officials have advised swimmers, surfers and paddleboarders not to provoke or interfere with the sharks.
