Rivera Middle School and nearby Rivera Elementary School in Pico Rivera were closed Wednesday morning after authorities received a threat against one of the schools.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department received a threat against Rivera Middle School (map) about 6 a.m. and contacted the district office, Superintendent Martin Galindo of El Rancho Unified School District said.
As a precaution, deputies closed the middle school as well as Rivera Elementary School, which is located a few hundred feet away.
No students or staff were being allowed to enter the campuses, Galindo said at about 8:15 a.m.
Sheriff’s deputies were conducting a sweep of the campuses and have set up a command post at nearby Maizeland School, according to Galindo.
Parents have been notified of the closure, which was expected to continue until the district receives further information from the Sheriff’s Department, Galindo said.
There was no word on what type of threat was made against the middle school.
Galindo later confirmed that investigators found nothing suspicious on the campus and classes were expected to resume as scheduled on Thursday.
The last day of school was scheduled for June 11, Galindo said.
