An animal rescue shelter in Santa Paula helped a dog that was severely injured after being attacked by two other dogs and is seeking the public’s help with donations.
“Sammy,” a medium-sized terrier, was taken to the Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center last week after suffering “horrific injuries” from being attacked by two other dogs she lived with.
The three dogs lived “peacefully” together and it is unclear what triggered the incident, officials at the center said in a news release.
The organization’s executive director, Nicky Gore-Jones said Sammy’s head “virtually had to be sewn back together.”
Her injuries caused severe swelling and staff members had trouble identifying the dog’s breed. Because of the swelling, Sammy is unable to eat and is being fed through a feeding tube that was surgically implanted into her stomach, the news release said.
She remains in critical condition at another veterinary clinic and needs to be closely monitored.
The organization is asking for donations to help continue the dog’s care.
“As a no-kill city shelter, we urgently need major donations to our medical fund to help pay for the sick and injured animals we receive every month,” Gore-Jones said in the news release.
