Authorities shut down southbound lanes of the 110 Freeway in the Gardena area on Wednesday morning after shots were fired at a BMW, causing two crashes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP received calls of shots fired in the area at 3:50 a.m.

People in a BMW and an Infiniti SUV were involved in a “drug deal gone bad” in Gardena early Wednesday when a gun was brandished, CHP Officer Simeon Yarbrough told KTLA.

The vehicles got on the 110 Freeway and were traveling next to each other when shots were fired into the BMW.

The BMW then crashed into a shoulder wall on the highway.

The SUV at one point struck an uninvolved Escalade that burst into flames, Yarbrough said.

No one was hit by gunfire in the BMW, but the occupants suffered unknown injures.

A dog was in a kennel in the BMW at the time of the shooting but was not injured, Yarbrough said

No one in the Escalade was injured.

The occupants of the Infiniti got away and are still outstanding, Yarbrough said. He asked anyone with information to call the South Los Angeles area office of the CHP.

CHP issued a SigAlert for the southbound 110 Freeway at Redondo Beach Boulevard around 4:30 a.m.

The freeway closure caused a mileslong traffic backup during the early morning commute. It has since reopened.
