‘Aggressive’ 10-Foot Shark Sighting Shuts Down Water Off Three SoCal Beaches

The water off Bolsa Chica, Surfside and Sunset beaches was closed Thursday evening after a shark sighting by a surfer was classified as “aggressive.”

The surfer reported seeing a 10-foot shark in the water off Sunset Beach and 23rd Street around 3:20 p.m., according to Lt. Claude Panis with Huntington Beach Lifeguards.

The shark was believed to be a juvenile great white.

Based on the surfer’s report of the shark swimming toward him, the movement was classified as “rushing”, which is one of four aggressive behaviors, Panis said.

Signs were posted along the shoreline to warn people to stay out of the water.

There was no word on when the area would reopen.
