The 10 Freeway through Upland was expected to be closed for an extended time Friday after California Highway Patrol shot a man who allegedly exited a vehicle with a knife.

Both east- and westbound lanes were shut down by 3:40 p.m. following the gunfire near San Antonio Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The freeway remained closed after 10 p.m., and no estimated time of reopening was given.

Eastbound traffic was being diverted off the freeway at Mountain Avenue, while westbound traffic was diverted at Central Avenue.

Officials say they were originally called around 2:45 p.m. regarding a man harming himself in the passenger seat of a car in the freeway’s westbound lanes, between Mountain and Euclid avenues.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man in the center median and halted traffic in the area, authorities said.

The man made his way to the eastbound lanes, where he was holding a knife and “began rapidly approaching the officer in an aggressive manner,” according to a CHP news release.

The officer ordered him man to drop the knife and then shot the man, striking him, officials said. CHP did not say how many shots were fired or where the man was struck.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities did not provide details on his condition.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials are assisting in the investigation into the use of lethal force.
