A Chaffey College police officer shot at an Ontario woman after making contact with her in a parking lot on campus, Rancho Cucamonga police said Tuesday.

It’s not clear what prompted the gunfire, and the woman, identified as 34-year-old Jullian Burdwell, was not struck. She was arrested.

Rancho Cucamonga police were called to the scene at the college’s northwest parking lot about 6:40 a.m. They found Burdwell being detained by the college police officer, who was not identified.

“Detectives concluded Burdwell was contacted by a Chaffey College Police Officer inside her parked vehicle in the northwest campus parking lot. During the contact circumstances led to an officer involved shooting,” a Rancho Cucamonga Police Department news release stated.

Burdwell allegedly drove away, prompting the college police officer to chase her over several city streets and back into the parking lot. The officer thought Burdwell might drive toward college employees walking in the area, so the officer “conducted an effective Legal Intervention Maneuver disabling Burdwell’s vehicle,” the news release said.

Burdwell was taken into custody by the college police officer and later taken to a hospital as a precaution.

She was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, felony evasion and obstructing an officer, as was being held at West Valley Detention Center on $50,000 bail.

There was no threat to the campus, the college stated on its Twitter account.
