A shooting near retail shops in the Fairfax District left one dead and sent another person to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, and the gunman is still at large, officials said.
Police received a call about a shooting with two people down on Stanley Avenue, near Melrose Avenue, at around 1 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department Officer Rosario Cervantes said.
A shooter in his mid-20s had approached two people standing near the intersection and opened fire, a police spokesman told the Los Angeles Times. The officer described the victims as two men in their early to mid-20s.
The assailant fled the scene on foot and remains outstanding, according to LAPD.
A man in his 30s suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene, while a second victim was taken to a hospital, LAPD Detective Sean Kinchla told KTLA.
Police told the L.A. Times that the surviving victim is in critical condition.
The motive behind the gunfire remains unknown, Kinchla said.
Aerial footage from Sky5 showed officers and firefighters responding to the location, across the street from a Starbucks and an Urban Outfitters store. A white sheet that appeared to cover a body was seen near some trees behind a building.
LAPD closed the area for an investigation and asked the public to avoid Melrose Avenue between Spaulding Street and Curson Avenue.
Kinchla described the suspect as a Black man last seen fleeing the area on foot.
Detectives were searching for witnesses and working to determine if any security cameras captured the fatal incident.
