Authorities are investigating after a small plane carrying two people crashed at the Fullerton airport Monday, officials said.
The passengers possibly suffered minor injuries, Fullerton police Sgt. Brandon Clyde said. He initially described the plane as having landed upside down, but video from Sky5 clearly showed the aircraft resting on its belly on the runway.
The single-engine Piper PA-24 crashed around 1:50 p.m. while the pilot was landing, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.
The aircraft was attempting to land when it hit a chain-link fence, the Orange County Register reported.
“It looks like they just came in too low on approach and hit the perimeter fence around the airport,” Airport Manager Brendan O’Reilly told the newspaper.
Both passengers were hospitalized but able to communicate with paramedics, according to the Register.
The plane had just departed from the airport when it turned back, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.
The FAA investigation is ongoing, but Clyde said no crime is suspected.
