Dustin McDonald, 23, was taken into custody Wednesday evening near his home in Garden Grove on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, the Santa Ana Police Department stated in a news release.

McDonald allegedly shot and killed 23-year-old Aaron Chavez, of Santa Ana, as Chavez sat in the passenger seat of a car near the intersection of North Main and East 12th streets (map) just before 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Police Department.

A caller reported that seven to 10 shots were fired, according to Anthony Bertagna, spokesman for the department.

Aaron Chavez is seen in a Department of Motor Vehicles photo provided by the Santa Ana Police Department.

Two women, ages 21 and 28, were also shot multiple times and remained in critical condition on Thursday, the news release stated.

No motive for the shooting was given, but the incident did not appear to be gang-related, Bertagna stated on Wednesday.

Anyone with information was asked to call Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS.
