Banning police on Sunday identified the suspect who they say shot and killed two people and injured two others as he drove through the Riverside County city in what appears to have been random attacks.
James Paul Diaz, 34, was booked on two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of shooting at a person from a vehicle and one count of shooting at an inhabited vehicle in connection with the incident, Banning police said in a statement.
None of the victims has yet been officially identified.
The rampage began about 11:30 a.m. Saturday when officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 700 block of East John Street, police said. Officers arriving at the scene found a male gunshot victim who had died at the scene. A second male victim was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
