Suspected bank robber killed by police in Fontana

A suspect in an attempted bank robbery was shot and killed by police in Fontana Thursday afternoon.

The robbery happened around 1:30 p.m. at a Bank of America branch on the 15100 block of Summit Avenue, according to the Fontana Police Department.

The suspect, identified only as a man, entered the bank location and demanded cash from the workers. Police arrived on scene in only minutes and surrounded the bank.

The man then fled about 100 yards on foot to a nearby Wendy’s restaurant where he attempted to blend in with customers, police said.

Witnesses alerted police to the suspect’s location and the man ran out the backdoor of the business. There the suspect was confronted by officers.

The suspect was allegedly armed with a firearm which led to at least one officer opening fire. It’s unclear if police fired first or if the suspect fired his weapon at all.

The unidentified suspect was hit by police gunfire and was declared dead at the scene. Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.

The person’s name and age have not yet been released by police and it’s unclear if the suspect was successful in obtaining any cash from the bank.

The shooting and attempted bank robbery are under investigation. No officers or bystanders were injured during the shooting.
