More suspected BB gun shootings in Corona area become latest in string of 91 Freeway attacks

Another BB or pellet gun shooting took place on the 91 Freeway late Tuesday night, followed by two more incidents early Wednesday, officials reported.

At about 11 p.m., a driver in a white vehicle was headed eastbound in Corona when someone opened fire, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The driver, Michael Hernandez, described what happened when he was behind the wheel of his white car.

“I seen a flash and right after the flash I heard the window crack,” Hernandez said. “I figured someone is shooting from the other side, or the opposite end of the freeway because there was no one in front of me.”

Hernandez pulled off the freeway and called the CHP to report the shooting.

No injuries were reported.

The CHP said two more shootings were also reported early Wednesday. At 5:05 a.m., a silver Toyota Camry was shot at in the area of the westbound 91 Freeway at the 71 Freeway. Then at 5:31 a.m., a call was reported to the CHP about a car shooting on the 91 Freeway westbound at the 55 Freeway.

A local trucking company said because of the string of shootings, its drivers are now avoiding the 91 Freeway altogether and instead taking side streets to other freeways.

“I’m uncomfortable for the fact that our employees are subjected to something this terrible,” owner Patrick Maslach told KTLA.

Investigators say they are looking into at least 57 similar incidents involving vehicles traveling through Riverside, Orange and Los Angeles counties.

Authorities have not provided any suspect descriptions, but CHP spokesperson Officer Dan Olivas said investigators are working to piece the incidents together and put a stop to the shootings. He said the public’s help is imperative in figuring who is responsible.

“As a witness if you happen to see anything please call us immediately, as soon as you can and provide us with as many details as you can. And if you have dashcam video that is even better. That is a great resource that we can utilize,” Olivas said.

Many of the vehicles involved in the incidents appear to be white, but Olivas said the types and colors of vehicles being targeted is varying.
