A suspected burglar died Sunday morning after being shot by police at a drugstore in Fountain Valley, authorities said.

Officers responded to a commercial burglary call about 4 a.m. at a Rite Aid in the 18300 block of Brookhurst Street (map), where they discovered the store’s glass front door had been shattered, said Sgt. Tony Luce of the Fountain Valley Police Department.

Police entered the store, observed a suspected burglar and opened fire, Luce said. It was unclear what prompted the shooting.

The unidentified person was struck once by gunfire and transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to the Police Department.

The person later died, a police spokesperson said shortly after 9 a.m.

No officers were hurt in the incident.
