A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Thursday after allegedly stabbing a female student at UC Irvine, campus police announced Friday.

Officers received a call around 5 p.m. regarding a woman suffering from stab wounds at the Vista Del Campo Norte student housing complex located in the 200 block of Arroyo,  according to UCI spokeswoman Laura Rico.

“I heard screaming coming from outside of my door,” said student Christopher Cain.

At first, Cain thought someone was joking around, but soon realized something was wrong and ran downstairs.

“She was up against the pole down there on the ground kind of crying,” he said.

He and several other students tried to stop the bleeding and called police.

When they arrived, officers discovered the young woman had been stabbed multiple times. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was in stable condition, Rico said.

In the meantime, another student who witnessed the attack managed to chase down the alleged assailant and detained him until officers arrived, according to Rico.

The suspect was identified as the victim’s ex-boyfriend Rosendo Aguilar.

He was not a student at the university, Rico said.

Aguilar was being held on $2 million bail and was due in court on Monday.
