Here’s a list of SoCal universities, colleges suspending in-person classes due to the coronavirus outbreak

The list of local colleges suspending on-campus classes is growing as officials announce additional cases of the coronavirus in Southern California.

As of Thursday, at least 14 universities and multiple community colleges in the region said they are moving classes online or finding other ways of providing instruction to students.

The latest schools to announce the move include Cal Lutheran, Ventura County community colleges, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal States Long Beach, Northridge, Fullerton and Channel Islands. Cal State Los Angeles on March 10 said it was canceling all public events through May 31, but so far had no plans to cancel classes.

The universities have emphasized that there are no confirmed COVID-19 cases on their campuses and that they’re taking the measure to lower the risk of infection in the community.

The Los Angeles Community College District also announced Wednesday that it’s moving most classes online for all nine colleges.

Elsewhere, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz and UC San Diego have all also previously announced they’re suspending in-person classes. UC Merced said it currently has no plans to cancel classes but is encouraging instructors to teach remotely if feasible.

Cal State University Dominguez Hills

The university has suspended all in-person classes from March 12 through March 17 so faculty can begin preparing for other ways to continue their courses. The campus will remain open, however, an all online classes will continue as scheduled.

Alternative instruction will start March 18 and continue through April 12. During that time, most classes will move to a virtual format. Classes that require a hands-on component may continue to meet, but in a limited capacity that will be decided between faculty and campus officials.

Face-to-face classes are expected to resume on April 13.

In addition, the university is also canceling or postponing all on-campus events that were scheduled to be held through April 12.

Cal Poly Pomona

Effective from March 13 to March 17, in-person classes will not meet. As of March 18, classes will transition to a virtual mode of instruction until March 27.

Campus offices, buildings and essential student services will remain open, including student housing and dining facilities, school officials said.

Cal State Fullerton

The university will suspend all in-person classes March 25 to April 26. Cal State Fullerton said it currently encourages faculty members to start transitioning to online instruction beginning March 12.

Virtual instruction is mandatory March 17 and 18 for a two-day trial, school officials said.

Chapman University

Effective March 12, classes at the campus in Orange will be held online.

Instructors not able to immediately switch classes online will be allowed short-term cancellations, which can’t extend past March 30, a statement from Chapman University said.

“All students and faculty must participate in alternate course delivery, as defined by the faculty,” the message said.

Los Angeles Community Colleges

All nine L.A. community colleges will be moving as many classes as possible online staring March 18 until at least April 13, the Los Angeles Community College District announced Wednesday.

Classes will be canceled on March 16 and 17 to allow for faculty to prepare for online teaching.

All events expected to draw over 100 people will be canceled or rescheduled starting March 16.

The colleges include: Los Angeles City College, East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Los Angeles Mission College, Los Angeles Pierce College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, Los Angeles Valley College and West Los Angeles College.

Cal State Northridge

On-campus classes will be canceled March 12 through 15 so instructors can plan delivering lessons online or through another alternative method, which will begin March 23 through April 19, university officials said.

Student housing will remain open, CSUN said.

Cal State Long Beach

CSULB officials said they’re keeping the campus open but will cancel classes from March 12 to March 17 to give them time to prepare for “alternative instruction,” which will begin on March 18.

“Some courses will continue to meet in person if alternative instruction is not appropriate, such as some laboratory, performing-arts, and physical-education courses,” the university said in a statement. “Accommodations associated with social distancing will be implemented in these courses.”

Students can expect receive further directions from their instructors but should reach out to them with any questions, the school said.

Pepperdine University

The last day of in-person classes will be March 13, Pepperdine university said. Instruction will resume online the week of March 16 for the rest of the spring semester.

University officials are asking all students who live on campus to move out by 3 p.m. on March 15. Those who need to remain in student housing can make a request by filling out a form.

In addition, on-campus events with an expected attendance of 100 or more will be canceled or postponed through the end of March. Coaches and athletes can expect to receive further information.

The university will remain open for faculty and staff during the transition to remote classes. “Additional details for staff will be forthcoming, but know that your health and safety continue to come first,” the school said in a statement.

UCLA

Effective Wednesday through April 10th, UCLA will suspend most in-person classes and instructors will continue teaching the courses online.

Students will also be taking their final exams remotely, the university announced in a news release.

The university said that though campus housing will remain open throughout Spring break, students are being encouraged to start the new semester from home.

More than 97% of UCLA’s freshmen live on the Westwood campus.

UCLA will also be canceling gatherings of more than 100 people and the university’s sporting events will be largely spectator-free through April 10.

“For our entire community, please also remember that COVID-19 is clearly going to disrupt and change our schedules, habits and lives for the foreseeable future,” Chancellor Gene Block said in a written statement. “This will not be a perfect transition; however, it will not change who we are and what we do.”

UCLA is the largest of the University of California campuses and has a total of 45,921 students.

USC

USC on Wednesday announced that its students will be continuing their learning online until April 14.

The university had previously said it would move classes and seminars online for three days this week to test the ability to operate remotely. Then university officials on Tuesday extended online teaching until March 29 before the date was pushed again until mid-April.

“Students who are leaving campus for Spring Recess, may not return until at least Monday, April 13,” provost Charles Zukoski said in a message to the community Wednesday.

USC is canceling all events, both on and off campus, during that time period and intercollegiate sporting events are expected to continue without spectators.

Travel for students and staff is suspended until March 29.

UC Riverside

The Riverside university is suspending in-person instruction through April 3 and has announced that this quarter’s final exams will be conducted remotely.

Instructors were told to plan to teach the next quarter’s courses fully online through April 3, but also prepare to continue online instruction through the rest of the quarter as a precautionary measure.

On-campus gatherings of 150 people or more would be canceled or rescheduled, the university said.

UC Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara university will be transitioning to remote instruction starting Wednesday through at least the end of April.

Instructors were told to move the classes and exams online.

“Given our campus’s transition to remote instruction and the possibility of additional travel disruptions and restrictions, we are recommending that all undergraduate students traveling for spring break be prepared for the possibility of remaining away from campus through the month of April,” Chancellor Henry T. Yang said in a statement.

University officials recommended that campus groups “strongly consider” postponing or canceling crowded on-campus events.

UC Irvine

Next week’s final exams at the Irvine campus will be administered remotely, and the university will be transitioning to remote teaching for the spring quarter.

“Students living on campus are strongly encouraged to return to their off-campus residences and, if possible, and to stay at home during the Spring quarter,” UCI said in a message to the community.

All on-campus events and gatherings with more than 100 participants are canceled.

The university will also not have any fans at its sporting events.

Officials said UCI Health will remain fully operational.

Loyola Marymount University

LMU announced Tuesday it will move in-person classes online from March 16 to March 31, after the spring break.

“During this period of online instruction, we encourage students to return home to their personal residences,” LMU President Timothy Law Snyder said in a statement.

Faculty and staff can continue work on campus during that period.

The university said it is still reviewing campus events to determine whether they should be postponed or canceled.

Ventura County Community College District

All four campus locations — Moorpark, Oxnard, Ventura and Ventura College East Campus — will begin transitioning to voluntary virtual classes next Monday, March 16, before implementing mandatory online instruction March 23 through April 6.

The schools will go on spring break April 6 through 10. For now, normal classes are set to resume April 13, but administrators plan to reassess the situation after spring break.

So far, the are zero confirmed and zero presumptive COVID-19 cases associated with the school system.

Cal State Channel Islands

The campus in Camarillo said Wednesday that it will suspend classes after spring break in preparation for a transition to online instruction.

Starting this Friday, March 13, professors can voluntary begin virtual instruction, according to a letter to the campus community.

When spring break ends March 30, classes will be suspended while faculty prepares for the digital shift. Classes will resume April 6, and be held exclusively online through May 1.

“CSUCI will remain open during every phase of these planning efforts and students will continue to be welcomed on the campus for all student services,” including housing, dining, health and other services across campus, the school said.

So far, there are zero confirmed and zero presumptive cases on the campus, officials said.

California Lutheran University

The private university in Thousand Oaks said Thursday that it’s transitioning to a social distancing plan starting Friday, March 12, through at least April 5.

All classes are expected to be online-only by Monday, March 16, but residence and dining halls will remain open, the school said.

Spring break will still be held April 4-12, and the school has yet to decide how it will proceed after.

All campus events with an expected turnout of more than 100 people are canceled, and the school encouraged smaller gatherings to cancel as well.
