A sheared fire hydrant caused the roof of a Chevron gas station to collapse on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The incident began around 7 a.m. when a large dump truck backed into a fire hydrant at the intersection of Holt Avenue and Mountain Street (map), according to Jeff Higbee from the Fontana Police Department.

Water from the sheared hydrant shot up into the air and filled the canopy covering the station, which caused the roof to collapse on top of the gas pumps, Higbee said.

The streets around the station were open, but the Chevron location was closed, he added.

No injuries were reported.

The extent of the damage was not immediately known.
