Cleanup underway after Hollywood Hills water main break

A water main break created a watery and muddy mess along a busy street in the Hollywood Hills and impacted some local businesses Monday afternoon, officials said.

The water main break was reported at about 2:30 p.m. at 3305 N. Cahuenga Blvd., between Barham and Universal Studios boulevards, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.

The pipe that ruptured was a 12 inch cast iron clean water main, according to Dawn Cotterell of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The running water seeped into businesses along Cahuenga Boulevard and damaged some cars that were parked in the area.

Video from Sky5 showed large amounts of sand-colored water flowing through several streets.

One southbound lane on Cahuenga Blvd. between Barham Blvd. and Fredonia Drive was closed.

Crews from the Department of Water and Power responded to the scene, and by 6 p.m., the water had been shut off.

A cleanup was expected to continue for several hours, and water was expected to be restored in the area to residents and businesses by 2 a.m.

Sidewalk cleanup and repairs will be underway through Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
