A high school and an elementary school in West Covina were being evacuated Friday after a bomb threat, police said.
South Hills High School was placed on lockdown, West Covina Police Department Office Rudy Lopez said just before 1 p.m. He called the threat “viable” and said police were not taking it lightly.
The high school and nearby Mesa Elementary, about a block to the north, were being evacuated, Lopez said.
Students from both campuses were being moved to Barranca Elementary in Covina, he said.
An assistant to the Covina Valley Unified School District superintendent confirmed that the two school were evacuated due to a “credible threat,” with students moving to Barranca Elementary, about a mile to the south.
A parent told KTLA that she was told to pick up her South Hills student at Barranca Elementary.
Police and fire vehicles were stopped in front of South Hills High and Mesa Elementary, aerial video from Sky5 showed. South Barranca Street was blocked off in the area.
South Hills High was recently in the spotlight when two female Covina Valley Unified teachers were accused of having sexual relations with students during a school trip. A third teacher, a man, was put on paid leave when he posted to Facebook that the students “should have just kept your stupid mouths shut and enjoyed it.”
