Woman escaped kidnapper after 6 days held captive in Adelanto, deputies say

A San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department patrol vehicle appears in an image posted on the agency's website in April 2019.

A woman escaped her kidnapper after being held captive in Adelanto for almost a week, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is looking for the captor.

The woman, whose name has not been released, flagged down help at El Mirage and Aster roads at 7:50 p.m. Monday, deputies said in a news release.

She told deputies that she’d met a man named Tom in Los Angeles on March 12 and “came willingly with him to Adelanto,” the release said.

Once she was in San Bernardino County, the woman was not allowed to leave for six days “until she was finally able to escape and flag down help,” the SBSD said. A search of the area did not turn up Tom, the crime scene or evidence, deputies added.

Authorities said Tom is believed to be 30 to 40 years old, about 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. He is white or Hispanic with a shaved head and dark-colored goatee, and he has no prominent tattoos, scars or markings. He was last spotted driving a dark-colored four-door SUV.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective A. Pangburn at 760-552-6800.
