A man died after being dragged by a U-Haul van for several miles through the streets of Wilmington following a shooting Saturday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers responded to several reports, including one from a witness who told officers they were following a U-Haul van that was dragging a man on the roadway, police said.
According to LAPD, the man became trapped beneath the vehicle after a “scuffle” and shooting occurred at a business in the 1600 block of Mauritania Avenue before 8 a.m.
“The person may have got caught under the vehicle … as one or more vehicles were fleeing,” LAPD Capt. David Kowalski said.
The man was dragged for about several miles, according to Kowalski. His body was discovered on the Pacific Coast Highway.
Authorities have not yet identified him.
At least one man has been named a “person of interest” in connection with the incident and was being questioned by detectives, Kowalski said.
“We’re not sure what his involvement is,” he added. “We do know he was there.”
The Daily Breeze reported that the incident may have started with an attempted robbery, but Kowalski did not confirm that.
According to the newspaper report, the man killed was part of a small group of armed men trying to rob someone, and he was run over by an accomplice.
