A woman battling cancer recently got the attention of Garth Brooks, who stopped a show in Minneapolis to serenade her after seeing a sign that struck a chord with the Grammy Award-winning country singer.
Teresa Shaw had been fighting stage three breast cancer for five months, and decided to take a sign to Brooks’ Friday show that read, “chemo this morning, Garth tonight, enjoying ‘The Dance.’”
After asking an usher if she could move closer to the stage so Brooks could see her message, the singer took notice and hugged Shaw before grabbing her sign and holding it high so other fans could see it.
“Those guys that say, man if God would just get a big old hand that comes out from the sky and writes ‘I exist,’ then there would never be any doubt, right? Well I want to tell you now, God just stuck his hand out and he wrote,” Brooks said.
Brooks’ own mother and sister died of cancer, KTLA sister-station Fox2now reported.
“You have all of my strength. You have everybody’s strength in here and you go kick cancer’s ass,” Brooks told Shaw.
Shaw, whose favorite Brooks’ song is “The Dance,” said it was a memorable night.
“This was right on top of my bucket list,” Shaw said in a CNN interview. “Last night was really just a boost that I really needed.”
And although Shaw didn’t know how to play guitar, Brooks gave her one after the show.
“To give away something like that is just, it’s remarkable, and now if I ever have a bad day I can always go look at his guitar and get inspiration,” she said.
